Wonderful green cloth Hardbound book & guide to the birds of India published in London by John Lane - The Bodley Head in 1910 (MCMX), entitled, "Indian Birds: A Key to the Common Birds of the Plains of India." Written by Douglas Dewar (1875-1957), a British attorney, civil servant in India and ornithologist, who was born in London and studied at the University of Cambridge. A prolific writer, Dewar wrote 10 books (of the 24 he authored) on birds from India alone. This is the rare first edition of his third book on birds in India and serves as a descriptive identifier to the avian life of the central Asian sub-continent. The book is in good overall condition with some scuffs and fading on the cloth typical for a book that is over 110 years old. Gilt lettering & decoration on covers and spine. Signature & date inside front cover from past owner, "Mary 3 viii 1915." A few scattered early handwritten margin notes & pages lightly & evenly toned. Great book for birdwatchers & naturalists.
