80% Off - WWII American Optical AO Aviator's Pilots Sun Glasses AN6531-1 - Clearance Carnival:£ - Comforters
Beautiful pair of original WWII aviator’s sunglasses. Type 1 lens is green tinted and transmits 50% of incoming visible daylight. Lenses in good vintage condition with very small spots and one small scratch on right lens (see pic) Includes original leather carrying case that can be fitted on flight belt. Original label inside case with some damage (see pics). This pair were my grandfather’s (served in North Africa in WWII). The nickel plated frame is made of a copper based alloy to prevent offsetting compasses; has some oxidation/loss of plating near welds (see pics). The "teardrop" shape lens accommodated pilots who were constantly looking down at their instrument panel, and influenced all future Aviator style lens shapes. Lenses were made to a joint standard shared by the U.S. Army Air Corps and the U.S. Navy, hence the "AN" (Army/Navy) specification number. Part and stock numbers: W33-038 AC-3165. See pics for condition.
