After describing his first battles, at Shiloh and Stone River, Captain Johnston’s narrative covers the march to Chickamauga and the ensuing conflict, during which he was captured and taken to the Confederate Libby Prison in Richmond. Once confined, Johnston and the other inmates planned their escape, experienced some failed attempts, and eventually made their way out through a tunnel.
